I think my challenge has to be to create a piece of meta about something you enjoy, be it fannish or otherwise!

For the purpose of this challenge, I'm going to define meta as any opinion or discussion of something that's more complex than "I love/hate/am indifferent to this thing". So for example, even "I love/hate this thing because..." totally counts! Comparisons between things; explorations of in-story or authorial reasons for things; and speculation of all kinds are other extremely viable forms of meta that I just came up with off the top of my head.

Actually, I don't know if this is going to work at all, but I got so many awesome positive responses to the post where I talked about the joy of discussing characters and playing with what-ifs that I'm going to declare the comments of this post a sort of... meta fest? for sharing and prompting meta and what-ifs of any kind. You can mention a fandom or fandoms you're particularly interested in and/or a subject you'd like to see discussed in a fannish context, and maybe it'll kick off some fun conversations!

Example prompts:

  • Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood headcanons!
  • Person of Interest, parallels between Shaw and other characters
  • What are some of your favorite neurodivergent characters and how does their neurodivergence manifest?
  • What one thing would you change if your favorite canon(s) were rebooted, and why?

All of you are so cool and I'm secretly so shy! Won't you come and play?

For this challenge, I give you a Doctor Who limerick I composed for the occasion!

The Thirteenth rebirth of the Doctor
Can't really be said to have shocked her.
She's only campaigned
Against being mansplained
To, and eyerolled at menfolk who mocked her.

(Just one more episode left in season eleven, aahh!)

At first I thought I had only one site I wanted to rec for this, but actually I guess I have three!

  • Screencapped.net is a great repository of movie and TV stills. Most of their caps are in downloadable zip files you have to make an account to access, but in my experience, they're absolutely worth the trouble!
  • The IMFDB, or Internet Movie Firearms Database, is a fantastic resource for anyone writing a character who uses firearms on the big or small screen. They break down every weapon every character is seen using, with visual evidence, and honestly, I'm in awe.
  • And I've only recently found this one myself, but The Tool-Kit by Emma Darwin is a collection of writing-related blog posts on a fascinating array of subjects, from narrative proximity to your characters to figuring out what to gloss over. As with any advice, take what works and leave what doesn't, but I'm finding it really interesting to explore!

I think I'm inspired by people who broaden my idea of what is possible.

Sometimes this is with breathtaking prose or gorgeous narrative structure or deft handling of theme. Sometimes, it's with a fic that might not be traditionally polished, but has such a good heart and such an important message that I'm reminded that a story doesn't have to be glossy and perfect to make the world a better place.

Sometimes it's by posting a story written straight from the id, or by reveling in countless variations on a beloved theme, or by unabashedly embracing the tropiest of tropes, and in doing so remind me that it's okay and better than okay to have fun.

And sometimes it's not through fiction or other forms of art, but in conversation, when someone is able to express disagreement without hostility, or thoughtfully synthesize multiple sides of a conversation, or check in about boundaries and to try and make sure that everyone involved feels respected and safe. Or, on the other hand, by showing honest pain or sorrow or anger instead of swallowing them down, and through that act of courage, making a little bit more space for those feelings to exist and meet with understanding.

I'm inspired by the little moments of grace and kindness that make me think, oh, it can be this way. And so many people create moments like that that I can't possibly list them all -- but I'm grateful to all of you.

It turns out that going a week without adequate sleep really makes it hard for me to keep up with this challenge, go figure! But I think I'm finally starting to catch up again, so here goes.

I had to think a lot about what canon or canons I wanted to rec for this challenge. There are so many shows I love! [personal profile] amovingtarget even suggested that I could use this post to rec a canon I haven't seen yet to myself, and for that I know exactly what I'd pick: The Great British Bake Off, which from everything I hear is really sweet and soothing and something I definitely need to try.

But finally I realized what I need to rec here, and it's the romance novels of Courtney Milan!

She's someone whose books I'd seen recced for ages, and I even wanted to give them a try once I saw someone talking about the one with a shy black mathematician being wooed by an Irish pro-suffragette satire columnist, but although there have been romance novels that I've admired and enjoyed, it's never been my genre as much as science fiction and fantasy and fanfic all are, so I guess it was easy to leave her work on my to be read list.

Then one day I learned that Courtney Milan is the pen name of Heidi Bond, whose witty and insightful blog I'd followed wayyy back in the day when she was a law student. And once I knew that, I absolutely had to try her work -- more than ten years after her blog's deletion, I still remembered it fondly, so obviously I had to read her published writing! And luckily enough for me, the prequel novella to her Brothers Sinister series was (and is) available as a free sample, so I was quickly able to discover that her published fiction is really, really good.

Mind you, she isn't an entirely traditional romance author. As she says about her decision to self-publish in her FAQ:

In case you’re wondering, the push I was getting from my traditional publishers was that the books I was writing for them were already too quirky.

So do I think I would have been able to write the Brothers Sinister as I did? No, hell no. What would have changed?

Everything. I mean, completely everything. The notes on everything would have come back as “NEEDS MOAR JERK.”

So if she doesn't write alpha assholes, what does she write?

So many fantastic things! She writes about men who are virgins and unmarried women of breeding who aren't; about peers and the sons of coal miners; about scientists and journalists and activists in spades -- and this is just in her Victorian era Brothers Sinister series, which is about not a family of sinister reputation, but just about a handful of nerds who think it's funny that they're all left-handed. She writes about bad sex and great sex; about contraception and past sexual assault; about blood family, and found family, and the times when the two overlap. She also writes fantastic secondary romances I sometimes love even more than the primary ones -- and one of them is sapphic!

I think my personal avorite of the Brothers Sinister series is number three, The Countess Conspiracy, but all of them have characters and moments I love. And so far I've only read one of the four series her website lists -- I think next I need to try the Cyclone Series, which is contemporary and looks super intriguing.

So yeah -- if you're into het romance that's refreshingly low on toxic masculinity, consider giving Courtney Milan's writing a look!

OMG, this is such a fun one. I love too many fics to pick three favorites (or even thirty favorites), but here are three of my favorites that I would like to recommend!

In Some Assembly Required by [archiveofourown.org profile] valtyr, Tony Stark (from the Marvel Adventures continuity, which I know nothing about, but I didn't feel too left out) gets zapped by a ray that gives him the kind of body a cis woman might have. 50k of identity shenanigans, scrambling for a way to change back, and ill-advised sex with Steve Rogers ensue. And I love it so much! Ten years after its writing, some of the terminology's already a little dated, and I wouldn't hate it if Steve had caught up on his LGBTQ history just a little better, but Tony's feeling about his new body are still one of the most relatable depictions of gender dysphoria I've seen, and I remember how much it meant to me to find a magic body change fic that recognizes that trans people exist and matter. Plus, it's just incredibly readable and snappily written!

In Outsider Perspective by [archiveofourown.org profile] Neery, John and Harold lose their episodic memories and have to fill in what they can from context. The conclusions they draw are imperfect, and when their memories return, they have to deal with the fallout of the new, equally imperfect assumptions they make in the aftermath. This fic is one of my all time favorites of Person of Interest fandom, which means it's running up against some pretty steep competition. But the character voices are spot on, the tropes are delicious, and the hurt/comfort is so good. 13k, but it always takes me as long to read as if it had twice the wordcount because I keep having to stop and just have feelings.

And then for light and the world's turning by [archiveofourown.org profile] staranise, which is a little over 1k of Jupiter Ascending fic, I can't do much better than the prompt it was written for: Caine expected the sex and to do what he's told and to like it. He didn't expect to be taken care of and cuddled and thanked afterwards too. The thing I found so amazing about this fic, when I first read it, was the idea that it's possible to deserve and even receive gentle treatment while one is still broken, and lost, and untidy; that that isn't a reward reserved for people who are first able to fix themselves. Revisiting it now in the light of having finally watched Jupiter Ascending five years after the fact -- yeah, it absolutely holds up.

I think what I'd most like to recognize about myself here is how good I am at getting excited about things. That might sound silly! But I really like hearing about things that people are working on, and I also really like exploring new ideas, and I think that makes me pretty good at cheerleading, or bouncing ideas around with, or just talking forever about random AUs for the fun of it.

I'm not the person you'd want to go to if you needed someone to really push you hard to meet your goals, but I am someone who will be here for you 100% along the way and cheer for every bit of progress -- and the times you take a much needed rest! -- as well as for making it across the finish line. And I'm not the most likely to tell you that I think you're flat out wrong (unless it's about something I have strong moral feelings about), but I will absolutely explore every side of the issue with you for as long as you're interested. And I'll enjoy doing it! And that's something I really like about myself.

Thinking about this a little more, maybe isn't surprising that a lot of what I'm happiest and most proud about isn't the fic I've written or the fanart I've drawn, but just the conversations I've had about different aspects of a character's personality, or what they'd be like if they had magic, or what might happen if they ended up with a sentient roomba. There's something about tossing ideas back and forth like that that's really rewarding.

What do I wish existed in fandom or that I could get my metaphorical hands on? Let's see...

  • I'd love to find more reaction posts or thinky meta for shows I'm watching! So I guess right now, that would be Stumptown, The Good Place, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and maybe Fleabag. (And Sym-Bionic Titan, although that's a decade old...)
  • I'd also love more meta on pretty much any topic. I feel like I used to follow a lot of blogs talking about things like gender, kink, writing, psychology, politics... And of course I still see posts like that, but I feel like a lot of the discussion has moved to twitter, where it's harder for me to follow, so I'm always looking for more.
  • Longfic recs in fandoms I read in, or even in fandoms I haven't! I don't mind jumping into the deep end for a story that has rich characterization, cool worldbuilding, and/or soothing angst.
  • Recs for original short stories available online, especially if they're SF or fantasy. I always forget how much I like getting tastes of new characters and worlds until I click on a story and remember again. #OwnVoices a plus!
  • Fanfic with inventive new premises, like [personal profile] rionaleonhart's awesome FFXV fic Becoming Strangers, in which Ignis wakes up to find that none of the other bros remember who he is. That's not an established trope, as far as I can tell, but once I read it, I was like, damn, why is it not??
  • Active kink memes for fandoms I'd like to write for! [community profile] meme_of_interest is still responsible for the only smut I've ever posted, as well as a couple of gen ficlets (and a lot of WIPs). I'd love to get to experience that kind of energy again.
  • And of course, I'd be incredibly delighted by any fanworks inspired in any way by my own. I'm still tickled that one of them was translated into Russian, and that was years ago. ♥

Since I've seen other people mentioning community norms they'd like to see for this challenge... I guess I'd also wish for fans who are privileged in some way, especially fans who are also in the majority, to do a better job of listening to people who don't share that privilege. If cis feminists would listen to trans women, for example, or if white fans like myself did a better job of listening to fans of color, I think we'd all be the better for it.

I'm not usually much for setting explicit goals, a fact which I think causes some sorrow to my more organized friends and family members. But there are a few things I'm hoping to work towards this year!

Chocolate Box )

Driving lessons o_o )

Cleaning up )

More and better connection )

Moar muscles, moar Strong )

And you know, this entry actually felt a lot better to write than I was expecting, so points to [community profile] snowflake_challenge once again. ♥

Unsurprisingly, one challenge I'm feeling quite fond of right now is the [community profile] snowflake_challenge itself, which has not only been fun so far but also introduced me to several awesome new people. If you would like to complete up to fifteen low-pressure posting challenges over the month of January and meet other people doing the same thing, it just might be the fannish event for you!

In terms of communities, I have a lot of love for [community profile] the_good_place, where we've been having cozy little conversations about the current and final season of The Good Place every week it airs. I'm also newly excited about [community profile] poi_fanworks ever since learning that they're going to be holding a monthly Person of Interest longfic book club this year. Conversation won't be starting for another couple of weeks, but I'm looking forward to it so much!

Finally, in terms of fests, Chocolate Box has been a lot of fun every time I've participated in it. (I'm counting this round, even though I haven't even signed up yet, just because I got so excited about nominations, okay.) It's a low pressure exchange with a minimum of just 300 words or a nice sketch that's 500 pixels on a side, and it turns out that's just about exactly my speed. Plus I love the part where on a day that can be pretty intensely about romance in places that celebrate Valentine's Day, Chocolate Box is basically a great big crowdsourced love letter to the community aspect of fandom and the way we come together to share the things we love. Anyway, right now they're in sign-ups -- the deadline is January 7th -- and I can't wait until I get my assignment on the 10th. ♥

Snowflake Challenge January 1 - 31

For the second challenge of the month, have over a thousand words of ramble about my meandering course through fandom!

many fandoms, several kinks )

Ultimately, I seem to be tragically monofannish by temperament, and at the moment, I'm between great fannish obsessions. There are plenty of books and shows I enjoy, and I can enjoy fanfic about them, not to mention fanfic for things I've never seen; but there isn't anything right now that quite fills the place that Person of Interest or White Collar or Harry Potter did.

But that's okay. I'm still having lots of fun in fandom -- and you never know what could be right around the corner!

Hey all, this is mostly a heads up that I'll be doing the [community profile] snowflake_challenge this January, which I expect will approximately double my posting frequency to around four entries a week, so you can adjust your expectations and/or reading lists accordingly.

Snowflake Challenge, January 1 - 31.

For the first challenge, I've put up an updated intro post and linked it in my profile. It's something I've been meaning to do for ages, so I guess this challenge is getting off to a pretty good start for me!
