Some more of The Fifth Season, until The Good Place kicked me in the tender bits and I reverted to reading fanfic until my brain recovered. Fortunately, it's all been really good fanfic!

Something You Somehow Haven't to Deserve by [archiveofourown.org profile] dsudis deserves content warnings ) It's 10k of Eskel from The Witcher, mainly -- with some Geralt/Eskel too, but I wouldn't really call it a primarily shippy piece. It was a good fic for me to find this week.

The latest installment of the Xenoethnography series by [archiveofourown.org profile] Dasha_mte is as wonderful as ever -- it's this amazing epic series in which Optimus Prime seeks an anthropologist to help bridge the culture gap between Autobots and humans, and I love it to bits. It also deals with some heavy subjects, like war and death and a variety of social ills, but honestly, I find it a joy to read.

Most recently, Winter in London by [archiveofourown.org profile] Waid, which I happened on while skimming through old entries of [personal profile] violsva's, is a beautiful 45k content warning ) fic set among the original Sherlock Holmes stories, written alternately from Watson's and Holmes' points of view. It hits so many of the favorite tropes I mentioned recently -- noncon, hurt/comfort, mutual pining -- but it's also just a gorgeous character study of two people who have grown very close but are still learning more about each other.

i think you're so good (i'm nothing like you) by [archiveofourown.org profile] MulaSaWala for the [community profile] poi_fanworks big bang book club. Both the fic and the book club discussion were super fun! I do think I appreciated the fic more than I would have if I hadn't read its prequel, but this is also the installment in which Reese (aka my terrible feelingsful fave) enters the Everyone Lives AU, so I can see good sides to starting here too!

Four shorter fanfics... )

Three short stories recced by pink_ink! )

Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee is a middle grade book about a young fox shapeshifter whose older brother has gone mysteriously missing from the Space Forces. Unsurprisingly, it's very different from the Machineries of Empire trilogy, but I'm liking the worldbuilding so far!

The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin, also recced by [personal profile] pink_ink, is not for the faint of heart, but is extremely good at what it's doing. In a world where cataclysmic earthquakes and volcanoes have destroyed civilization after civilization and no one knows when the next might come, where people with the rare ability to control the earth are either killed by anyone who discovers them or carefully trained and selectively bred (which is exactly as awful as it sounds)... well, a lot of stuff is happening, and I'm still in the process of figuring a lot of it out. But it's all deeply compelling, and I can't wait to keep reading and find out what happens next!

Also worth mentioning is this insightful if pessimistic twitter thread by Courtney Milan on the poisoning of the concept of compromise in US politics.

Jupiter Ascending, which is exactly as everyone in fandom described it. The CGI is gorgeous! The incest vibes are off the charts! I'm not sure I really understood anything that happened at any point! And I especially don't understand why they asked Channing Tatum to grow that unfortunate facial hair. But that last scene was so pretty!

Stumptown 1x11 and 1x12, "The Past and the Furious" and "Dirty Dexy Money". )

Doctor Who through episode 11x08, "The Witchfinders". )

I've also watched the entire first Netflix season of Astronomy Club, which is a fantastic comedy sketch show threaded through with social awareness. )

The Good Place 4x12, "Patty", unhappily discussed here.

But in more cheerful The Good Place news, I also watched and adored All Star by [archiveofourown.org profile] maristu, which is the Jason vid I never even knew I needed. ⭐ ♥ 🐆

Some more of Reparations by [archiveofourown.org profile] Saras_Girl. The plot is thickening and feelings have definitely been caught!

I have also, in the interests of taking part in POI book club next week, happily devoured learning to fall (don't try this at home) by [archiveofourown.org profile] MulaSaWala, which is the shorter prequel to this month's story. It's a delightful pre-series what-if where Nathan and Grace fall in love, and I'm totally looking forward to reading the sequel!

I also finished Gideon the Ninth.

If this novel were a fic on the AO3, I would expect to see it tagged with many content warnings. ) It's also incredibly vivid, gripping, and often hilarious when it isn't breaking your heart. It reminds me a little of Tanith Lee, except with even more necromancy and lesbians.

I will now proceed to discuss every twist in the novel. )

Many fanfics, mostly short. )

In the world of origfic, I (28M) created a deepfake girlfriend and now my parents think we're getting married by Fonda Lee is exactly what it says on the tin, and basically amazing.

I'm also reading Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (previewable here), and it certainly makes a bold impression! Necromancy, spaceships, impassioned teenage rivalry, a heroine fond of the longsword and of disreputable comics. In addition to the general atmosphere of biting sarcasm and abusive hazing, there is a grisly detail worth warning for ). But I've been enjoying myself so far!

PLAYED

Seedship, a lovely poignant little game where you're an AI trying to find humanity a new home among the stars. I don't seem to be very good at that job yet, but maybe someday?

WATCHED

The last two installments of Parallax by Adam Westbrook (mentioned previously). I'm glad I watched this; it's entertaining, thought-provoking, and not a minute longer than it needs to be.

This Is My Story, which is introduced here by LeVar Burton. Six short personal accounts of racism in America, five from black men and one from a black woman. I think Burton's own story hit me the hardest.

The Witcher 1x01, "The End's Beginning". I don't think this is my kind of show. )

Sym-Bionic Titan 1x06, "Shaman of Fear". The enemy monster in this episode had a really cute design. Apart from that, still a low-investment watch, which is sometimes exactly what I want.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel through the end of season three! )

Fleabag 1x01. )

Stumptown 1x10, "Reality Checks Don't Bounce". )

The Good Place 4x10, "You've Changed, Man". )

Unsurprisingly, one challenge I'm feeling quite fond of right now is the [community profile] snowflake_challenge itself, which has not only been fun so far but also introduced me to several awesome new people. If you would like to complete up to fifteen low-pressure posting challenges over the month of January and meet other people doing the same thing, it just might be the fannish event for you!

In terms of communities, I have a lot of love for [community profile] the_good_place, where we've been having cozy little conversations about the current and final season of The Good Place every week it airs. I'm also newly excited about [community profile] poi_fanworks ever since learning that they're going to be holding a monthly Person of Interest longfic book club this year. Conversation won't be starting for another couple of weeks, but I'm looking forward to it so much!

Finally, in terms of fests, Chocolate Box has been a lot of fun every time I've participated in it. (I'm counting this round, even though I haven't even signed up yet, just because I got so excited about nominations, okay.) It's a low pressure exchange with a minimum of just 300 words or a nice sketch that's 500 pixels on a side, and it turns out that's just about exactly my speed. Plus I love the part where on a day that can be pretty intensely about romance in places that celebrate Valentine's Day, Chocolate Box is basically a great big crowdsourced love letter to the community aspect of fandom and the way we come together to share the things we love. Anyway, right now they're in sign-ups -- the deadline is January 7th -- and I can't wait until I get my assignment on the 10th. ♥

READ

Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen. I wasn't sure I'd have better luck with this than I did with the last few non-fannish novels I've tried to read, but I was underestimating the sheer power and charm of Austen's snark.

Spoilers for a novel published in 1817. )

I'm a little glad that I have now read all of Austen's finished novels -- I was saving this one until I had at least a glancing familiarity with the Gothic novels she plays with, until finally I realized I enjoy reading Austen much better -- but also, I'm sorry that I don't have more to read. Maybe I need to reread Pride & Prejudice sometime soon...

Familiar Thing by [personal profile] the_ragnarok is 33k of kinky, magical, polyamorous origfic, chock full of lovely bespoke relationship negotiation. I'm especially fond of Henry, whose favorite geometric shape is a scalene triangle, and who thoughtfully integrates his Jewish faith with his magic practice. Abusive exes, painful miscommunications, and agonizing chronic pain flare ups each make their appearance in this story, but the care the main characters all bring to their relationships still gave it a restful feeling for me.

A fascinating article about Hmong language radio shows implemented as never-ending conference calls. Sometimes I really love human ingenuity and dedication.

I have also read and enjoyed some fanfic this week -- e.g. [archiveofourown.org profile] scaramouche's Steve/Tony Binary System and (via [personal profile] oracne) [archiveofourown.org profile] thedoubteriswise's Steve & Natasha friendship fic the way a traveler knows a traveler -- but I feel like with the onset of obligatory familial togetherness season, I haven't really been able to give it more than half my attention, unfortunately.

And this two hour video about the genius of Pathologic, which is a more than a decade old Russian video game that is apparently as grueling as it is beloved by the rare souls who manage to finish it. I found myself seriously wondering whether watching this would give me nightmares -- which I do not often have! -- but it never failed to hold my interest. Um, content notes on request?

Many fanfics!

Dragon Age: [archiveofourown.org profile] iodhadh's So a Crow, an Enchanter, and a Ben-Hassrath Agent Walk into a Bar..., accurately tagged Zevran Arainai's Amazing Self-Preservation Instincts, is a bit of fun Zevran/Iron Bull following a foiled assassination attempt.

Yuri!!! on Ice: hood & glove by [archiveofourown.org profile] Fahye and featuring gorgeous illustrations by [archiveofourown.org profile] hawberries, is 12k of beautiful fairy tale romance between Otabek Altin and the shapeshifting fae Yuri. The balance it strikes between enchantment and irreverence is exquisite.

Fire Emblem Three Houses: Speak Your Secrets, Stay Your Tongue by [personal profile] stunt_muppet is for a fandom I know nothing about, but it's got a languid teasing female dom pegging her eager husband, which is really all I needed to know.

Marvel Cinematic Universe: Overhaul by [archiveofourown.org profile] scaramouche is a rare thing in fandom: a fic in which one character (Tony) is hopelessly pining after another character (Steve) who is fully aware of the first character's attraction, but doesn't return it, until he does. I thought my love for mutual pining could not be eclipsed, but the premise of this fic thoroughly captured my interest!

Pride & Prejudice: Not Every Gentleman by [archiveofourown.org profile] hele, a novel length work starring Edward Bennet, has a tricky, delicate premise it takes many chapters to fully reveal. Its own author seems hesitant to recommend it, and I see why -- it's the sort of thing people are likely to have strong feelings about, and my own feelings vacillated as I read it. But ultimately, I have to appreciate the nuance of its ending, which rejects too-simple conclusions and offers the beginning of something precious and new.

For anyone seeking spoilers... )

The Good Place: The Ethics of Narcissism in the Afterlife: A Case Study in Rortian Pragmatism by [archiveofourown.org profile] Mosca is by now jossed -- unsurprising in fanfic for a show so full of twists and turns! -- but still delightful. It's genuinely written as an academic study, complete with footnotes, while also containing excellent character voice and even a touch of smut. But also, it's made me really interested in the work of philosopher Richard Rorty! I feel like I have to find more about him now!

Much of fanfic, as usual. My favorite might be A Fire and a Conflagration by [archiveofourown.org profile] iodhadh, which is 16k of Doran and Iron Bull exchanging poems that start out merely ribald and grow increasingly intimate. My favorite poem... )

I was starting to write a little summary of what I love about it, but actually, I think I'm going to sit on that and give it a post of its own once I'm caught up. It's really fun, though -- not particularly complex, but refreshing.

Mostly fanfic once more!

I especially liked The Sky Begins to Roar by [archiveofourown.org profile] lettered, which is 47k of The Walking Dead in an AU that's missing the walking dead part, with Daryl Dixon helping Carol Peletier find a way out of an abusive marriage while he highkey pines for Rick Grimes. I know absolutely nothing about any of these characters, but it's an amazing story, if you're in the mood for content notes ). The rest of the series is good too, in a more romance-centric way, but the found family element of this first installment stole my heart in the best way.

Today I also finished the intriguing Love of a Particular Kind by [archiveofourown.org profile] laurakaye, which is upwards of 50k of Clint/Coulson set in an omegaverse heavily inspired by various avian mating rituals. I especially enjoyed the psychological worldbuilding, if that makes any sense -- the careful depiction of how a prolonged and public courtship helped Clint believe that he was wanted and desired, in particular, was really cool. And for those of you who are into that kind of thing, the final chapter is a dedicated overview of the physiology and sociology of Homo avis!

However, I did read all of Down the Rabbit Hole by Issendai, which is a thoughtful and in depth look at the abusive behaviors that some people will publicly admit to in forums for parents who are estranged from their adult children. It's very interesting, in a strange, sad, awful kind of way.

There are no Electric Sheep under the Qun, an AU with high tech as well as magic, in which the Iron Bull is a refurbished military android.

What Cannot Be Cut Away, which explores why Tal-Vashoth are said to go mad. Content note. )

And perhaps most gloriously, Mistakes Were Made, which is a modern AU fake dating fic... where the Iron Bull is fake dating Rilienus, to help him get over his best friend slash terrible ex. This is a wonderful twist on the fake dating premise, and I'd love to see more of it! Plus, the dialogue is just consistently hilarious. And I love all of Bull's cats.

I finished Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma: An Integrative Approach, and I loved the ending to bits. This fic doesn't portray a simple or uncomplicated relationship between Aubrey Thyme, professional therapist, and Crowley, her client, who is (as you may have heard) a demon; and the more I think about it, the less sure I am that it could, given the givens. But as an examination of Crowley's trauma and its many echoes in the wider world he lives in... yeah, I really love this story.

Since then, I've mostly been reading an assortment of Dragon Age fic, notably:

The Hard Way by [archiveofourown.org profile] Penknife, which is 2k of prickly early friendship while Cullen & Dorian platonically huddle for warmth.

a finger's worth by [archiveofourown.org profile] torch, which is about 3k of Alistair/Zevran not quite as platonically huddling for warmth.

Off Label by [archiveofourown.org profile] Dragonflies_and_Katydids, an Alistair/Zevran series about Alistair the blushing virgin also being the dommiest dom, and it's... so much fun? In this amazing way where he gets the worst top drop, and Zevan has buckets of his own trauma, and they both have serious trust issues, and just... omg. I am really exactly in the mood for this kind of luxurious angst right now. Content notes. )

Incidentally, I can't believe that Dragon Age: Origins spoilers! )

GAMED (OPINED?)

Oh, the usual. I will note that Blizzard has returned Blitzchung's prize money to him, but they only reduced his suspension from competition to half a year, and they still deny that their original decision had anything to do with the Chinese government, which I'm not sure anyone believes.

With that said, I've seen mentions of xenophobic or anti-Chinese sentiment cropping up in the backlash against Blizzard, and if anyone has links going into more detail on that, I'd welcome them. I'd rather avoid bringing racism into my anti-censorship if I can!

Doctor Who up to 9x07. I don't feel like I have much to say except that I love his sweater with the holes in it -- it's in the second picture down, and very unfairly maligned too -- which I like to interpret as a risque choice to bare entire millimeter sized portions of his chest to any passerby.

But for some reason I am frivolously grumpy. )

I can't believe that the creators of this show, five years before I even watched it, deliberately opted not to cater to my very specific demographic.

Some more Iron Bull/Dorian, most notably Pas de Deux by [archiveofourown.org profile] CandidCantrix, which is 4k of absolutely lovely Iron Bull POV.

Some uncomfortable underage fic... )

And, at [personal profile] jmtorres' recommendation, the incredible Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma: An Integrative Approach by [archiveofourown.org profile] Nnm, which is a novel length Good Omens fic from the point of view of Crowley's therapist. I always want my favorite characters to get therapy, honestly, but I never expected to find a fic that did such an amazing job at it. I'm on the second to last chapter as I write this, but I feel confident recommending it anyway.

Lily's Garden and StarCraft II as before, but... I'm feeling awfully conflicted about the latter since learning yesterday that Blizzard stripped a player of his prize money -- and banned him from competing for a year -- when he declared his support for the Hong Kong protestors. The Warden by Anthony Trollope. [personal profile] alchimie kindly recommended a couple of good starting points among his books, and I am reading neither of them, but I am reading the first book in the series they're part of. So far I'm enjoying it well enough -- it's a bit weird about women, but it gives an interesting portrait of institutional inertia and the people who favor it over, say, justice.

My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows, originally because my mother wanted to discuss it with me, although I think she's since forgotten why. I'm really not sure what to make of this book, which is about Lady Jane Grey but also... magical hijinks? This would probably be a less jarring combination to someone who was already aware of her position in English history, but reading about her execution in a foreword immediately before her lighthearted adventures made for a bit of mood whiplash. Anyway, I'm about halfway through it so far!

A few health and politics links. )

GAMED

Still Lily's Garden and StarCraft II, and also some Furistas Cat Cafe, which does not have the same view of feline psychology that I do -- I was expecting a mechanic where the cats had to go and rest between clients, not where they got antsy without attention! -- but which I cannot dislike at all, because it lets me pet cats and make them purr. They are such good cats. Sadly though, the app keeps crashing on my somewhat elderly tablet, so this is unlikely to become a personal fave.

More Doctor Who. I quite like Danny! "Mummy on the Orient Express" is probably my favorite episode of season 8 so far, for the courage and unexpected kindness.

The Good Place season premiere!!! Oh it's good to have this show back! I have no idea what they're doing with this season, honestly, but that's part of the charm by this point. I'm so pleased there's been conversation over at [community profile] the_good_place, too!

And a youtube series called The Alt-Right Playbook, which is quite cheerful about calling a fascist a fascist. I don't think I agree with it about everything, but I was really struck by the idea that what the more patriarchal strains of Christianity have in common with unfettered capitalism is a love of hierarchy. I always had a little trouble understanding why those strains of conservatism got along so well, but now it seems perfectly clear.

So yesterday I learned that the official The Good Place twitter account has invited us to place ourselves on a chart whose X axis ranges from Jason to Tahani and whose Y axis ranges from Chidi to Eleanor. And I mean, I can see that, I guess -- you've got social class going in one direction and apparent goodness in the other. That kind of works.

But also, that way of arranging them is absolutely wrong and I'm incensed. So have some tl;dr! )

And to veer a little farther afield, with spoilers-- )
enemyofperfect: a spray of orange leaves against a muted background (Default)
And I keep wanting to make a proper post about it, but since that keeps not happening, I give you instead an exchange my mother and I had today while we were trading weird stories our brains tell us while we're asleep.

[personal profile] enemyofperfect: So then the giant skeleton king screamed and kind of fell on top of us--
Ma: That does sound like a creepy dream.
[personal profile] enemyofperfect: Oh, no -- this isn't the dream that upset me. The one that upset me was about the ethics of dealing with bandits in a post-apocalyptic society.
Ma: ...?
[personal profile] enemyofperfect: I mean, a blogger I respect said that we had to have a zero tolerance policy for bandits, because if they had any chance of reintegrating with society, people would be way more likely to give it a try. But I felt really uncomfortable with that idea! Like, if bandits have no options except banditry until they die, of course they're going to keep killing and stealing. And what if someone is actually born into banditry -- what do we do then? What option is there that lets us take a hard stance with bandit parents without forever traumatizing their kids? Or do we kill the kids too? There's no good solution here!
Ma: You know, some people just dream about having to give a presentation in their underwear.
[personal profile] enemyofperfect: ...I just realized something.
Ma: Is it that your name is Chidi?
[personal profile] enemyofperfect: I AM CHIDI ANAGONYE.

I'm trying not to be too ridiculously pleased with this realization, but let's be real -- how much better than an indecisive cinnamon roll of a dead ethics professor could I possibly do?
