READ

Some more of The Fifth Season, until The Good Place kicked me in the tender bits and I reverted to reading fanfic until my brain recovered. Fortunately, it's all been really good fanfic!

Something You Somehow Haven't to Deserve by [archiveofourown.org profile] dsudis deserves warnings for a rather gruesome opening dilemma and a lot of suicidal ideation arguably stemming from internalized ableism, but I thought it did an amazing job of depicting one of the most important tools I have found for staying alive when your brain is trying to kill you, namely, recognizing that you don't have to make any final decisions right now. It's 10k of Eskel from The Witcher, mainly -- with some Geralt/Eskel too, but I wouldn't really call it a primarily shippy piece. It was a good fic for me to find this week.

The latest installment of the Xenoethnography series by [archiveofourown.org profile] Dasha_mte is as wonderful as ever -- it's this amazing epic series in which Optimus Prime seeks an anthropologist to help bridge the culture gap between Autobots and humans, and I love it to bits. It also deals with some heavy subjects, like war and death and a variety of social ills, but honestly, I find it a joy to read.

Most recently, Winter in London by [archiveofourown.org profile] Waid, which I happened on while skimming through old entries of [personal profile] violsva's, is a beautiful 45k rape recovery fic set among the original Sherlock Holmes stories, written alternately from Watson's and Holmes' points of view. It hits so many of the favorite tropes I mentioned recently -- noncon, hurt/comfort, mutual pining -- but it's also just a gorgeous character study of two people who have grown very close but are still learning more about each other.

WATCHED

Doctor Who spoilers through episode 12x03, "Orphan 55":

I was disappointed that the Doctor erased the memories of two protesting women in part two of "Spyfall"; I suppose I had imagined that the show, like me, preferred to forget what the Doctor did to Donna back when.

But I did quite like Hyph3n in "Orphan 55", who I 100% headcanon as a furry in face paint. I mean, that really was not Doctor Who level alien makeup, was it? No. She was a furry, and she wore that fact proudly, and I respect her for it.

The Good Place 4x13, "Whenever You're Ready".

There were good things about this episode, and I'm glad for the people who loved it. But whatever the show's intentions -- and I'm genuinely sure that they were good -- Chidi did not seem at peace to me; he seemed to me like someone who had gradually lost all joy in life until the simple act of continuing to exist was painful.

I might say more about this later, when I've had a little more time to think it through. There were good things about this episode. But it was not a good episode for me.

Winter in London is so great! I thought about reccing it to you for one of your Snowflake posts, but then never got around to it. Glad you found it regardless. (I also love the author's Masked Ball for the same pairing.)
