OMG, I have such complicated feelings about Sherlock/Joan! On the one hand, I have so much love -- no, I mean, SO MUCH LOVE -- for the existence of this strong platonic f/m relationship. Like, these are my childhood dreams being realized, here. SO MANY FEELINGS. Also they are just objectively the best -- except for Sherlock's sexism, which he needs to cut out, okay -- and I don't want anything about them to change, except for them both to continually grow as people and fall ever more deeply in (platonic) love.

But on the other hand, I'm kind of thinking about discussions you'll see sometimes about the kind of dudeslash that requires whisking female love interests out of the way first, where some people say they like slash because you can escape the creepy gender norms that are all too easy to fall into with het, and other people say, but isn't that a reason to write better het, not to write women out of the picture entirely? (Meanwhile, no one ever writes enough femslash. Hey, have you seen the epic genderswap 1950s femme/butch Sherlock fic by breathedout? Words cannot.) As much as I want to cling to and treasure Joan and Sherlock's canon non-shippiness, shipping them well also seems like an undeniably worthwhile venture, not to mention hot. And part of the beauty of fanfic is that we can in fact have it both ways, or rather in so many different ways that it's laughable to think of being restricted to just two.

Ultimately, in my heart of hearts, I think I mostly don't ship them, simply because I like them even better as they are. However, I will always be in favor of all the non-sexual D/S between them. You know that amazing fic Paler Than Grass where Sherlock keeps getting in the way of Joan's dates? I finally got around to reading it last night (largely because I remembered your reccing it), and oh, the beautiful D/S. ♥
