Enchantress from the Stars, and moreso its sequel Far Side of Evil, have a prime directive concept i like quite a lot and I think I have blathered to you about. I dunno if I want to rec Sylvia Engdahl in general to you though; I went looking for some of her other work and was totally turned off by one about a society where everyone has to be medically treated for everything and no one dies, they just get cryogenically frozen; and rebels are off not being medicated and dying naturally. it was very ummmmmmmmm. it rubbed me the wrong way

I can't make up my mind if I'm brave enough to read it myself! But probably I should at least give it a try.

I think you would enjoy Servant of the Underworld by Aliette de Bodard! It's a police procedural. . . set in a fantasy Aztec empire! It's so much fun.

I adore Lud-in-the-Mist by Hope Mirrlees. It was out there subverting fairytale fantasy before fairytale fantasy was even codified as a subgenre!

And everyone should try Frankenstein. :)

I have heard good things about the de Bodard, which I am happy to hear you confirm! And you make Lud-in-the-Mist sound even better than various mentions of its place as a classic had. Thank you!

(I suppose technically I'm a few pages into an ebook edition of Frankenstein, even if that's exactly where I've been for... some while now. But I will read it eventually! I think I just need to be in the right mindset for it.)

I really enjoyed Lud-in-the-Mist and second the recommendation for it, but you might read Rossetti's Goblin Market first -- it is a poem, longish but not super-long, and Mirrlees is (IMO anyway) playing with some of Rossetti's imagery. Plus, it is a good poem!

As someone who is holding off on reading Northanger Abbey until I've read at least one of the novels it's satirizing, I thank you for this note about reading order!
