We said goodbye on Friday.
It is very strange to finally lose someone you have already been mourning for a month. I suppose, life being what it is, I will almost certainly have the opportunity to revisit this experience, and perhaps at much greater length. I will have to learn to pace myself better.
Anyway. I am not entirely sure we did not wait too long, but on the second-to-last day he seemed much happier than I would have dared to expect, and on the last day he was very thoroughly medicated, and this is what I console myself with. Actually, I guess maybe he didn't feel too completely terrible even at the end, since he found the energy to explore just a bit at the vet's office, and I think even he would have preferred to remain hidden in his carrier if he'd been wholly miserable.
I am certain that we didn't make the decision too early, though.
He was the very model of a modern feline gentleman, by which I mean that he was charming, courteous, adventurous, affable, and felt himself entitled to pretty much anything that happened to catch his fancy, human attention most definitely included. We had the most wonderful conversations. I will miss him.
