Both myself and my cat, that is. It isn't clear how much time he has left, but he still seems to be enjoying what he does have, so I'm really glad about that.

What else is going on? Um. I've watched some TV, I guess. Spoilers behind the cuts!

Person of Interest 1x16, "Relevance":

OH MY GOSH, SHAW. <3 She's basically the best. I love that she got essentially the entire episode, with the regular cast getting cameos. I love that she fucking shot Reese after he said he was there to help -- not because she's bloodthirsty, which I think the fates of the cop and the drug dealer demonstrate that she is not, but because why the hell should she trust him, seriously?

And I love beyond words that she made her exit on her own terms. I would like to see a great deal more of this character, yes.

The other thing that struck me about this episode was that, like, Person of Interest actually wasn't a comedy this week. Which, okay, I've been told that I'm watching the show wrong to think that it ever is? But I don't really know how else to see it. There's an A.V. Club article about how Person of Interest's dominant tone is one of regret; I think I might say instead that it's of a certain sort of dislocated despair -- the kind where things have gotten so bad that you feel like maybe you might as well laugh anyway. Which is the same sort of despair that can lead to the decision to embrace whatever does remain, which is why POI is also an astonishingly hopeful show sometimes, but it can also be just the sort that says that Reese taking out an entire room full of people is hilariously funny, because it just is.

Shaw, though: I'm not sure despair is really a thing she does, or at least, not in any way that means giving up or letting her guard down even a little. I get the distinct impression that she's just always going to fight to the end, for whatever it is she's decided she's fighting for.

And I think that's why this episode felt legitimately tense to me, in a way that POI almost never does. Shaw doesn't accept helplessness in the face of vast and unknowable forces; she grits her teeth and keeps going. Which of course Finch and Reese do too, most of the time, but the difference is that Shaw doesn't seem to be resigned.

Elementary 1x17, "Possibility Two":

So, really the only thing I wanted from this episode was that it not ruin the absolute shining brilliance of "Details". And this I got! Joan is clearly off balance as she tries to learn a whole new skill set, but she keeps her dignity -- and, more than that: she is clearly in love with what she's learning. Meanwhile, Sherlock is quietly (which is to say, loudly, but with very little said on this particular subject) in love with having someone to share with.

Also he made a dinosaur. So, you know.

Television and worrying make up a remarkable proportion of my life, really.
