five questions meme!
With thanks to boxofdelights, who gave me five wonderful questions to answer!
1. What do you like best about living with your parents?
The way it's allowed me, or required me, to continually update and expand my perception of who they are. I value coming to understand them as people in their own right -- and given how bad all three of us are at keeping in touch, I suspect I might not have learned nearly as much without these additional years of daily interaction.
2. What do you like least about living with your parents?
The problem of similarly updating their perception of me can get in the way of figuring out who I am. It's not that they don't see me as an adult with my own opinions and goals; it's that I have a hard time not being cautious with relationships that go back as long as I've been alive, and sometimes that limits the space I have for figuring out what's right for me.
3. Flight or invisibility?
Oh, this one is tough! I think I'd have to go with invisibility at this point in my life, just to be able to walk around without wondering how other people see me. Flight would be more useful, but I'm scared enough of heights that I'm not sure I'd use it much!
4. Who is your favorite AI?
This one is also so difficult! I love so many AI characters so much! But I guess if I have to pick one, I'm going to say The Machine from Person of Interest, who manages to hold the positions of child, god, and moral agent simultaneously, which isn't something I often see. That show was kind of a mess by the time it ended, but The Machine definitely numbers among the characters it gave me to love.
5. Which is your favorite book by C.J. Cherryh?
I'm going to have to say Foreigner. There are so many other books of hers that have characters and scenes I love, or that changed the way I see the world, but Foreigner is unforgettable for me. The isolation and confusion, Bren's anxiety and the fact that he rises to the occasion despite it, that first immersion in atevi culture -- yeah, I think that book will always be the one closest to my heart.
